Miura CB-301 Irons

Katsuhiro Miura’s goal with the CB-301 was to design a forged iron that players of all handicaps would embrace, thus the CB-301 combines the forgiveness of a cavity-back iron with the playability of a blade. The CB-301 will appeal to the ambitious mid-handicapper as well as the most accomplished tournament player seeking a more forgiving iron with a player’s profile. Thanks to weight redistribution, the balanced head allows for a more fluid release through the swing.

Like all Miura irons, the CB-301s are hand forged and custom crafted by Katsuhiro Miura, Miura Golf Inc.’s 66-year-old founder, whose forged clubmaking skills over the past 47 years have prompted the Japanese to claim he has "God’s hands." Mr. Miura is director of manufacturing and product development at his Japanese company, Miura Giken Co. Ltd., which operates manufacturing facilities in Himeji, Japan.

"This iron is extremely easy to hit and has been very popular around the world," says Bill Holowaty, Miura Golf Inc.’s Vice President, General Operations of the CB-301, which, as a developmental model, earned a 2007 Golf Digest Hot List Player’s Iron silver medal. "With a thin top line, the CB-301 appeals to a good player, but the slight offset and progressive cavity make it extremely easy to play, and because it is designed to ‘get to square’ at impact, it is the straightest and most forgiving of our irons."

Although the age-old theories of forged iron design haven’t changed, the CB-301’s head features a redefined weight distribution within the head. Mr. Miura pulled the center of gravity in towards the hosel, making the head close more rapidly, while he moved more weight towards the toe to slow it down. By working with the ratio between these two opposing forces, Mr. Miura controls the way the clubface closes. The CB-301’s particular grind blends these two forces so the clubhead squares more easily, allowing for a more fluid swing instead of a guarded effort to guide the club. Only Miura Golf can achieve this because of its industry-leading quality control.

Years ago, Mr. Miura sought to correct the traditional, yet flawed forging process by forging the head and hosel separately with equipment that was custom designed for each specific part. This improved forging technique compresses the head’s molecules beyond anything made today, while maintaining the industry’s tightest weight tolerances. The result is superior feel and a perfectly balanced head. Equally important, in the process every hosel of every Miura club, including the CB-301 irons, is milled and thus perfectly symmetrical, with the tightest bore tolerances of any manufacturer. This guarantees every Miura customer will have a perfectly centered shaft. These two perfect parts are then "spin welded" together, resulting in a "tour-quality iron" that is available to everyone. In a word, Miura Golf’s manufacturing process "repeats" iron after iron, and repeatability is the secret to golf.

Miura’s forging techniques rearrange the mild steel’s molecular structure in a uniform pattern throughout the clubhead. The process eliminates void spots in the clubface and assures that every Miura club has the distance control, ball flight, spin and feel that golfers demand.

This tightness in the metal’s grain structure is what gives Miura clubs the controlled, soft feel other manufacturers cannot achieve. Miura’s proprietary "spin welding" process also produces the industry’s most consistent hosel. This unique procedure ensures the bore depths and hosel heights are identical on every Miura-made head and the shaft of every club will be perfectly centered.

"The CB-301 irons are a perfect choice for average players that might be hesitant about using a forged iron," says Miura Golf President Douglas B. Buchanan. "Nobody makes more beautiful irons than Katsuhiro Miura, and aside from the gorgeous aesthetics, the CB-301s feature enough technology to make average players or higher handicappers play better and have more fun in the process."

Miura Golf has quietly been building a dealer network throughout the United States so the CB-301-available in 3-iron through pitching wedge, plus P/S wedge-can be tested by visiting miuragolf.com to locate the closest Miura dealer.

Miura Golf’s corporate office is located in Vancouver, British Columbia and Miura Golf clubs are sold at the finest custom-fitting shops in North America. The company also makes and markets high-end clubs under the "MG Golf" brand, which is marketed by Miura Giken Co. Ltd. in Japan, and "Miura, "which is marketed exclusively by Miura Golf Inc. in the United States, North America and the rest of the world. I’ve played a lot of clubs…and nothing matches the 301. Its a shame they don’t make them anymore. If you can find them on ebay I highly suggest them.
